Polarity (In Three Parts) [2013] – for chamber ensemble with pre-recorded audio/video

duration: 30 minutes

A piece that blends abstract multimedia installation and live performance. The video and pre-recorded audio are meant to be played while a group of musicians situated around a room (three percussionists, one woodwind player, a guitarist and a pianist) perform along with it, following detailed written musical instructions all the while, but technically improvising the entire time. An audience can either sit in the space and treat it as a performance, or wander in, out and around, treating it as more of an installation; the ready fluidity of those two discrete worlds is the point.
