Fading Still (2014) – for string quartet
duration: 18 min
This piece, I feel, is about those problems in people’s lives that can’t be solved, and as a result are “dealt with” in other ways. Each movement establishes a musical problem of some sort, some structural imbalance or agitation, and in failing to transcend it, finds its own unique way of contending with it. The First struggles with the problem, but is too obsessive and dysfunctional on a whole and ultimately gives up; the Second fights frantically to abate its problem, only to have it come creeping back; and the Third (the most poignant response, I think) finds a way to accept and embrace the problem.
